Renaming variables

Looking for suggestions on how to handle renaming variables.

At the moment if I have var1 and use it within the content and scripts and then rename this variable within the process data manager, it does not update in any other location.
Is it intended that the user manually update the variable name in all used locations..?

Yes, that's how it works at the moment, unfortunately. Item names are simply referenced as texts. 

However, there's usually no reason to rename the item if the item name on your PLC changes, because the item name and item alias can be completely different.

Seen from a theoritical point a agree, but for understanding a program, it's worse when you have different names on PLC and HMI side.
