This kind of packaging has a lot of advantages: It offers space for branding and labelling, it protects the content safely during transport, and it is quite easy for the customer to recycle.
But because most companies use standard formats, almost 100% of the boxes are oversized. Void space needs to be filled to protect the product during transport, valuable space on the delivery truck is wasted. This means a higher carbon footprint and additional cost for the vendor.

New automation solutions for packaging-on-demand machines
With ctrlX AUTOMATION, Bosch Rexroth offers an integrated and modular automation platform that helps to solve the challenges of the E-Commerce business efficiently. The toolkit provides ideal support for all kinds of packaging-on-demand machinery – from basic cutting and creasing machines, for void space reduction systems, as well as for integrated lines for individual, custom-sized cartons.
Already cutting and creasing machines profit from key features of the ctrlX CORE: the controller platform integrates PLC, motion and IOT functionality into one space saving hardware. The HMI server can also run on the same HW, in combination with a ctrlX HMI web panel. The open software architecture enables easy access to ERP and MES systems. With integrated user management and the certified, built-in security features the machine is ready for online connections, e.g., for updates and IOT applications.
Peripherals for void space reduction systems, like sensors to determine product height in the box, or labelling devices can be easily connected via ctrlX I/O. The state-of-the-art, ultra compact ctrlX DRIVEs Operator safety is achieved through ctrlX SAFETY.
Integrated lines for individual packages have additional requirements. Cabinet-free drive technology from the ctrlX DRIVE family helps save floorspace by reducing the cabinet to a minimum.
